Time is Being, Being is Time: Internal Time and the Art of Bożenna Biskupska

“Time is Being, Being is Time: Internal Time and the Art of Bożenna Biskupska” is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Bydgoszcz and the most comprehensive presentation of her work ever staged in the city. The exhibition brings together more than one hundred works spanning over five decades — from pieces created in the early 1980s to the artist’s most recent works.

The exhibition presents Biskupska’s oeuvre not as a chronological sequence of closed periods, but as a single, continuous process unfolding through time. Works created decades apart meet within a shared space, allowing earlier and later pieces to illuminate and transform one another. The past is not treated as something finished: it remains active in the present, while each new work takes up and extends the gestures and questions present in the preceding cycles.

The exhibition forms Act II of the 22nd Mózg Festival – International Festival of Contemporary Music and Visual Arts, whose 2026 edition explores time as artistic material, lived experience and cultural memory. Biskupska’s work provides the conceptual core of a programme bringing together visual art, experimental music, performance and philosophical reflection.

The project also marks the culmination of almost a decade of artistic dialogue between Bożenna Biskupska and the community of artists associated with Klub Mózg. The exhibition unfolds across three historic venues in Bydgoszcz: Rother’s Mills Centre for Science and Culture, “Współczesna” Gallery and Klub Mózg. Each venue reveals a different aspect of the artist’s practice and places the works within distinct spatial and temporal conditions. The architecture and history of these venues become part of the exhibition experience. The recurring presence of red brick also creates a material echo of the International Laboratory of Culture in Sokołowsko — the former sanatorium complex where Bożenna Biskupska lives and works.

The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue featuring a text on Bożenna Biskupska’s artistic and social practice, a curatorial essay and documentation of her work. A special limited edition of the publication includes copies incorporating original marks made by the artist.
