Dialogues of Strings and Space – Encounters with Experimental Sound.

There are sounds that you don’t just hear, but step into. “Dialogues of Strings and Space” is an invitation to a world where music becomes space, and space begins to resonate.

In Sokołowsko — at the Zdrowie Cinema Theatre and the International Culture Laboratory — young participants will encounter sound that does not merely flow from the stage, but surrounds, guides and moves the body and the imagination. It is an experience of listening with one’s whole being.

“Dialogues of Strings and Space – Encounters with Experimental Sound” is an artistic and educational project for young people from the Mieroszów municipality, taking place in Sokołowsko. Around 300 young people will take part in the events, attending a concert and a performance showcasing contemporary forms of experimental music.

The aim of the project is to develop a conscious appreciation of sound art, broaden young people’s cultural literacy and foster sensitivity to unconventional forms of artistic expression.

Katarzyna Karpowicz’s concert introduces participants to the realm of intercultural dialogue. Traditional Japanese instruments — the koto and the shō — are presented in the context of contemporary performance techniques, microtonality and electronics. Participants learn how musical heritage can function within a modern artistic language.

Ellen Fullman’s performance using the Long String Instrument exemplifies art at the intersection of music, installation and spatial work. Young people experience sound as a physical and spatial phenomenon, learning new ways of listening and understanding the relationship between the body, movement and sound.

The project supports the development of perceptual skills, concentration and openness to aesthetic diversity. It presents art as a tool for learning, reflection and building conscious participation in contemporary culture.

Katarzyna Karpowicz

An artist who straddles the line between tradition and experimentation. She plays the koto and the shō, processing their sounds through electronics, oscillating between clarity and distortion. Her music is a journey through elusive realms — from ancient harmonies to waves vibrating on the edge of audibility. She combines detuning, microtonal tensions and subtle sonic textures, building a personal, highly sensual world. Fascinated by the aesthetics of imperfection and the power of small gestures, she creates music that simultaneously defies expectations and surprises with its elegance.

She is active in projects combining music with theatre, performance and the visual arts. Her approach to sound is characterised by delicacy, precision and a deep respect for sound as a vehicle for meaning and ritual.
